The Apothecary Diaries

Attention Spoilers!

"She's like a riddle. And I hate riddles. But I can't stop wanting to solve it."
- Jinshi

My review:

ONLY THE FIRST SEASON

Story:
The plot of The Apothecary's Diaries is exciting and mysterious, with an interesting mix of historical and political intrigue. The story surrounding Maomao, who works as a pharmacist in the imperial palace and uncovers secrets, remains captivating, with each secret and challenge taking a new twist.
It's reminiscent of detective work, yet still exciting and entertaining.
The chibi style adds a nice touch to the humor.

Characters:
Maomao begins as a quiet observer with a keen sense of logic and healing. Over the course of the series, she grows into an active, intelligent, and increasingly self-confident figure who can assert herself even against the strict hierarchies of the palace. Her sober nature and curiosity ensure her continuous development—both professionally and personally. Even Jinshi, who initially presents only a beautiful facade, gains more depth with each episode.

Emotions:
The series creates rather subtle but effective emotional tension. The mysterious cases and Maomao's steady development create a consistently gripping feeling. Even if there are no major emotional outbursts, the dynamics between the characters and the underlying romance captivate with intense glances, gestures, and small words. The series doesn't touch with cheesiness, but rather with clever nuances and quiet emotions.

Ending:
The end of the first season of The Pharmacist's Diary is quiet but meaningful. It doesn't offer a classic climax, but rather an atmospheric conclusion that leaves room for development—both in the plot and in the characters' relationships.
Many questions are deliberately left unanswered, especially regarding the emotional bonds between Maomao and Jinshi. It feels like the end of a chapter—not the story itself.
You can clearly tell: There's more to come. And that's precisely what raises high expectations for the second season, which will hopefully provide more insight into the growing relationship between the characters.
A conclusion that arouses curiosity rather than ending contentedly – but in a quiet, elegant way.

Social criticism:
Men-dominated society. Maomao has to assert herself in a world full of power struggles and patriarchal structures, which provides an interesting commentary on gender roles and societal expectations.

Conclusion
The Pharmacist's Diaries is a cleverly told, atmospherically strong anime with a fascinating heroine, exciting puzzles, and a touch of romance. The series shines with its subtlety and clever narrative – anyone looking for a profound story with an authentic historical setting and steady character development will find it here.
I'm excited to see what happens next – there's still so much potential waiting to be developed!
I definitely need more depth in the love story and therefore have high hopes for the second season, which I won't watch until it's fully aired. Despite this expectation, the series already remains very captivating. In particular, the emperor's complex family history and the detective work, in which the characters grow through their challenges and discoveries, keep the interest constantly high. It's truly exciting to follow the characters' developments and see how the plot unfolds.
